What is the STAAR, and why it matters for your child's grade

The STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) is the standardized testing program every Texas public school student takes, from grade 3 through high school. It’s administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and aligned directly to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the same standards your child’s teacher is already using in class.

STAAR was redesigned in 2023 to include more online, interactive question types, cross-curricular reading passages, and evidence-based writing responses, not just multiple choice. Today’s STAAR asks students to explain their thinking, not just select an answer.

What it tests

Reading Language Arts and Math every year in grades 3 through 8, plus Science in grades 5 and 8, Social Studies in grade 8, and 5 End-of-Course exams in high school.

Who takes it

Every Texas public school student in grades 3 through 12, with high school students completing End-of-Course exams tied to specific classes.

How it's scored

Results fall into four performance levels: Did Not Meet, Approaches, Meets, and Masters Grade Level. Masters is the highest.

Why it matters

Passing EOC exams is required for graduation. 5th and 8th grade Reading and Math scores factor into grade promotion decisions.

90% of our students score Masters grade level: here's what that means

STAAR results are reported in four performance levels: Did Not Meet Grade Level, Approaches Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, and Masters Grade Level. Approaches is the minimum needed to pass, but Masters is where a student shows real command of the material, the level colleges and honors programs actually look for. Most students don't reach Masters without focused, TEKS-specific preparation, which is exactly where our tutors concentrate their work.

STAAR tutoring for every grade: Grades 3 through 12

Every STAAR grade is different. We teach the TEKS, question types, and skills for your child's specific grade, so every lesson stays relevant and focused.

Elementary STAAR Tutoring

Grades 3-5 are where foundational STAAR habits form. Third grade is most students' first STAAR experience. The format, the timing, and the question style are all new. By 5th grade, Science is added and results begin influencing middle school course placement. We build the skills and the test confidence students need at every step.

Topics Covered

Middle School STAAR Tutoring

Middle school STAAR gets progressively more demanding. 8th grade is the most consequential pre-high-school test. Strong 8th grade STAAR scores unlock honors and accelerated high school placements. Weak ones close those doors. We prepare students to reach Masters Grade Level before those placements are decided.

Topics Covered

High School STAAR: End-of-Course

Every Texas high school student must pass all five EOC exams to earn a diploma. Failing an EOC doesn't just affect a grade. It delays graduation and limits course options. We prepare students to pass at Masters Grade Level, targeting not just the minimum but the score that signals college readiness to admissions teams and scholarship committees.

Algebra I EOC (Required to Graduate)

Typically Grade 9 · Sets the tone for high school math
Linear equations, quadratics, exponential functions, systems, and statistics. Masters-level performance signals STEM readiness to high school counselors and university admissions.

English I EOC (Required to Graduate)

Typically Grade 9 - Reading comprehension and extended composition
Cross-genre reading comprehension plus an extended written composition. Strong writing fluency and evidence-based analysis are the highest-leverage prep areas for this exam.

English II EOC (Required to Graduate)

Typically Grade 10 - More demanding than English I
Argumentative essay writing, cross-text analysis, and rhetorical reasoning. The extended composition is heavily weighted. Students who can write a clear, structured argument under timed conditions outperform significantly.

Biology EOC (Required to Graduate)

Typically Grade 9-10 - Heavy on vocabulary and diagram
Cells, ecosystems, evolution, genetics, and human body systems. Scientific vocabulary and diagram interpretation questions are where systematic prep pays off most. Students who can read a graph and a cell diagram confidently tend to score well.

US History EOC (Required to Graduate)

Typically Grade 11 - 1877 to present · Document analysis
Chronological reasoning, primary source interpretation, and civic literacy questions. Many students underestimate this exam. The document analysis and constructed-response questions require specific preparation that content review alone doesn't provide.

FAQs

Common questions about STAAR tutoring in Dallas

The STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) is the standardized test every Texas public school student takes, from grade 3 through high school. Students in grades 3 through 8 take grade-level STAAR tests, while high school students take 5 required End-of-Course exams.

Masters Grade Level is the highest of STAAR’s four performance levels. It means a student has shown strong command of the material and is considered on track for college and career readiness, well beyond just passing.

Students who score below Approaches Grade Level have not passed. For 5th and 8th grade Reading and Math, this can trigger the grade promotion review process and may require summer intervention or a retest. For high school EOCs, passing (Approaches or higher) is required for graduation.

Yes. We cover Reading Language Arts and Math every year, plus Science in grades 5 and 8, and Social Studies in grade 8, matched to your child’s exact grade-level TEKS.

Yes. We prepare students for all five required EOC exams: Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, and US History, whether your child is taking one this year or several.

STAAR is a Texas-specific, TEKS-aligned assessment tied to grade promotion and high school graduation, taken every year from grades 3 through 12. The SAT and ACT are national college admissions tests taken mainly in 11th and 12th grade. Some students prepare for both around the same time. We can help with either or both.

We recommend starting at least 8 to 10 weeks before the test date for a grade-level STAAR test, and 10 to 12 weeks for an EOC exam. Students who are further behind or aiming for Masters grade level benefit from starting earlier.

It depends on the grade and subject. 5th and 8th grade Reading and Math scores factor into promotion decisions, and a student who doesn’t pass may need to attend a Grade Placement Committee review or retest in the summer. We’ll help you understand exactly where your child stands after the diagnostic.

Yes. Every tutor is trained on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for their subject and grade level, the same standards your child’s teacher is using in the classroom.

Yes. Full-length, timed STAAR practice tests, including the newer online question types, are built into every program, with detailed score analysis after each one.

Yes. If your child needs to retest in the summer for an EOC or a 5th or 8th grade Reading or Math test, we offer focused, fast-turnaround prep built around the specific gaps from their spring results.

Yes. Since STAAR itself is administered online, practicing in a similar digital format helps students get comfortable with the real testing environment, on top of the convenience of no commute.
